While on the surface, The Date-Plum might seem understated, it doesn’t take long for its strengths to become apparent. The mezzanine might be tiny, but it feels magical being up among the rafters, and there are also a whole host of books. The flat has been redone fairly recently but most of the original features are still around, like the brick arch in the wall, and this helps it keep its sense of character. You’re also in a beautiful area of the city, surrounded by largely pedestrianised streets.

Local guide
About Navona
Stretching from Piazza Navona to the river, the area is one of the most atmospheric in the city. The Piazza, with its Bernini statues and Borromini church, is the main draw, but there are any number of golden palazzos, many with inner courtyards to explore. The area is sliced in two by Corso Vittorio Emmanuele, one of Rome's most frenetic roads, but you can dive down the nearest sides street...

Indulge in people watching at Bar del Fico
This old school bar is enjoyed by both the young crowd and the seasoned locals who enjoy the shade of the fig tree.

Step into Habsburg Vienna
More akin to an Austrian coffeehouse than to a typical Roman establishment, Caffè Novecento is a place you can take your time, talk, and even have full meals.

Stroll through historic Rome at Via dei Coronari
This Renaissance street filled with antique shops is named after the vendors who used to sell rosaries to pilgrims on their way to the Vatican.

See an exhibition at Chiostro del Bramante
It hosts many remarkable exhibitions, but the cloisters themselves are also remarkable. The mezzanine boasts Raphael’s fresco Le Sibille.

Committed to the speakeasy style (make sure you remember the password), but considered one of the world’s best bars, and the cocktails here are to die for.

An independent bookshop at Otherwise
This indie shop is specialised in English language books and often hosts book launches, reading groups, and literary events.

Clink glasses at Cul de Sac
This small wine bar and bistrot has an encyclopaedic wine list and serves an eclectic menu until midnight. The tables on the piazza are the best.
