While Blue Barrel is undoubtedly best suited to solo travellers, it can provide a good base for the right people. The decoration is irreverent, and a bit quirky – we particularly liked the neon signs. The kitchen is a bit underwhelming, and it’s a shame that no basic ingredients are provided (not even tea and coffee), but luckily, Florence isn’t short on cafes, and the restaurant scene is decent too – the local steak is particularly famous.

Home truths
You'll have to take the stairs to the second floor, as there's no lift
The kitchen's pretty basic, with a small dishwasher, two rings on the hob and a microwave, but no oven, washing machine, or coffee maker
We came across a few scuff marks around the place – nothing major, but worth knowing about
The bed is smaller than a normal double and only really suitable for one
Theoretically, two people can also sleep on a sofa bed, but they wouldn't have much space or privacy
Unfortunately, Valerio isn't able to offer any on-demand cleaning
