On the top floor of a medieval building, Acorn really makes you feel like you’re in Florence. It’s the sort of setting that couldn’t be in any other city in the world (there’s even a view of the Duomo from the bedroom window). The flat itself isn’t huge, but there’s easily enough space for four people, and the terrace makes the world of difference, particularly in the warmer months, when it seems like the perfect place for an evening aperitivo.

Home truths
You'll have to take the stairs to the fourth floor, as there's no lift in the building
The kitchen's fine for simple meals, but it doesn't have an oven, nor are there any laundry facilities in the flat
When we visited, we weren't able to test the wi-fi speed
There's a glass wall separating the second bedroom from the living room – there's also a heavy curtain for privacy, but it's still worth knowing about
Watch your head on the sloped ceiling upstairs

About Santa Croce
Santa Croce is a trendy, architecturally impressive neighbourhood that’s less busy than the Duomo or San Marco districts, but still in the heart of Florence. Home to the eponymous basilica, and the Casa Buonarroti museum, it’s located in the eastern part of Florence’s historic centre. The largest crowds have thinned out by this point, but if you stay here, you're still close enough to explore the whole city on foot....

Pay respects at Basilica di Santa Croce
Many of Florence's most eminent citizens are buried in the Franciscan church, including Galileo, Machiavelli, and Michelangelo.

Browse the food at Sant'Ambrogio market
Less touristy than Mercato Centrale, this is where locals come to get the freshest produce and the best selection of meat, bread, and cheese.

Help yourself at All'Antico Vinaio
With great food at fantastic prices, and a self-service wine bar stocked with local vintages, it's no wonder that the clientele often spills onto the streets.

Turn the pages at Libreria Brac
A bookshop, a vegetarian restaurant, and a bar – you could quite happily spend all day at this hidden gem.

See the frescoes at Palazzo Vecchio
Florence's town hall, this palace also holds some masterpieces, most notably in the imposing Salone del Cinqucento.

Explore Florence's Gothic Cathedral
The Duomo, along with the Baptistry of St. John and Giotto's Belltower, form a stunning architectural complex in the middle of the city.

Kick back to jazz at Empireo
A rooftop hotel bar, not only does this place have stunning views of the city, but there's regular live music.

Get a coffee at Caffè Le Murate
A combination of a bookshop, a cafe, and a gallery, this arts centre is housed in a former prison, but these days the vibe is slightly different.

Hide away in Serre Torrigiani in Piazzetta
From May to September, a small square turns into a beautiful garden. It hosts various events, and is a perfect spot for a glass of local wine.

See David at Galleria dell'Accademia
Michelangelo's David is one of the most famous pieces of art in the world, and no trip to Florence is complete without ogling the five-metre high sculpture.
